I have been practising family law for about 15 years after taking my law degree at York (Osgoode) 2003-2006. I grew up in Malton and Bramalea in the 70s -80s and have lived in Oakville since 2007 when I came here to practise family law in 2007, becoming a partner at Berry Gage LLP in 2014 with Marian Gage.
During that time, I have settled thousands of divorce, litigated about 10% and, for the most part, been successful at trial and motion. When I have lost, the lessons have been learned. I value a good relationship with my colleague and the courts and know that is the best way I can advance your case.
My approach to family law is always focused on your best outcome. I have an approach to figuring out the path that might work best for you considering the law, your circumstances and the people involved. Having listened and learned, compassionately, with many families through my family law career, I have adopted a friendly and pragmatic approach, always looking for the easiest and simplest solutions but ready, willing and able to fight the good fight when necessary.
I am a deeply spiritual person, and my legal practise is informed by the Unitarian mission to nurture community and acting for an equitable, sustainable world. In my personal time, I love to sing and walk and meditate. I participate in a variety of community festivals and groups and most recently, I have been acting environmental issues to secure a future for my children, Drew, age 18 and Edwin, age 16.
I graduated from Osgoode Law School in 2006 and was the winner of the Albert Weisbrot prize for Advanced Family Law. I articled with Karen Thompson and was called to the bar in October 2008. My background in sociology informs her humanistic approach to family law and gives her great insight into the underlying issues that make separation and divorce so difficult for modern families.
Susan’s practise of family law is mainly devoted to assisting clients in negotiating effective Separation Agreement or advocating for her clients in court.
Susan has appeared at the Ontario Courts of Justice, the Unified Family Court and the Superior Court of Justice. She is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Ontario Bar Association, the Halton County Law Association and the Hamilton Law Association.
